How on earth can you set goals for the coming year when you have no idea what military life will bring? I ask myself this all time and TOTALLY get that question especially after a year like 2020.
From 2 rapid deployments and living in a state that has very strict COVID guidelines, I found myself throwing my hands in the air and saying the heck with it to my 2020 goals. This year many of you may feel the same way but don’t throw in the towel just yet! You can still create goals and plan for success, even when the future is unknown.
With the uncertainty of 2021, I told myself I was not going to set specific goals. We know as military families that uncertainty always goes hand in hand with military life and that it is not likely to change. We can’t control all circumstances or what happens around us, but we can control our reactions and how we handle what is thrown at us.
Instead of setting specific goals, I decided I was going set a mantra of sorts to live by this year. To embrace Plan B. 2020 really opened my eyes to the world of suck and the craziness the military could throw at us. As military families we know the importance of having a Plan B but do we truly embrace it?
So I challenge you to give yourself permission to abandon goals if you have to and go for the next best thing. Set up sub goals each month that you can focus on. Build in flexibility and make yourself a priority. If a goal happens to be unattainable, keep a positive attitude and continue to stretch or set new goals for yourself regardless of what 2021 has in store for you.
